British Values (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development)

Fundamental British Values

English Martyrs' Roman Catholic Primary School is committed to helping pupils develop their understanding of, and respect for, people of all faiths and cultures. We aim to educate our pupils in every way, enabling them to take their place in modern Britain. Our curriculum will give children the opportunity to understand and live the key British values we actively promote.

Democracy – To be part of a system where everyone plays an equal part. At English Martyrs', pupils are involved in democratic processes: they play an active role in voting for House Captains and School Council members for example. They also agree class rules and sanctions. Children are aware that they live in a democratic society where they are entitled to a vote and a voice.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs - To learn about the wider community through the study of other world faiths. , children look at other faiths and explore and discover the similarities with their own. They mutually respect that we all have different beliefs and values. We have multi-faith assemblies. Visits to other faiths places of worship are encouraged. We have staff from other countries and visitors from other faiths who share their language and culture with our pupils.

Mutual Respect - To be respectful of all points of view and opinions. At English Martyrs', we demonstrate mutual respect for both adults and children within school and the wider community. Respect for others is embedded in our Mission Statement which underpins everything that we do. Sports activities promote an attitude of equality and fairness. We celebrate awards and achievements of the pupils gained from outside school activities. Visitors to the school, e.g. Paralympian, illustrate to our pupils different life experiences.

Individual Liberty – To be free and be given opportunities to express views or ideas.  Our curriculum enables children to be passionately involved in both school and community- based activities of their choice. Pupils have key roles and responsibilities in school, such as Young Leaders, Class Monitors and Friendship Club Leaders. Through our curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices. Within school, all pupils are actively encouraged to make choices knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.

Rule of Law – To learn that all people and institutions are subject to and accountable for their actions and behaviour. As a school we follow a
rule of law: we have a clearly structured Behaviour Policy which all stakeholders understand and follow. There is a shared understanding of the reasons behind school rules and the consequences that apply when they are broken.  Class and school rewards e.g. School Value Awards, are embedded in school life. Assemblies are delivered with a focus on the law e.g. Safety Awareness and E-Safety.
