Assessment
From September 2014 all students in England and Wales are working within a new National Curriculum. Assessment levels have been removed from the Curriculum and schools were asked to formulate their own ways of assessing pupils' progress.
We at English Martyrs' have joined a project called '21 Steps'. Over 50 schools are now using the steps to help with assessing pupils' achievements.
There are 21 steps in each area of learning (reading, writing and maths), 3 steps in each year group. Each subject area is broken down into different components to help both assessment and inform next steps for planning.
Achieving the 3 steps together ensure the pupil has attained the end of year expectation. Some children may however be working on steps below age expectation but targets and interventions are in place to help them reach these.
Pupils' achievement or steps are carefully monitored and moderated both in school and between other schools in the area who use this method of assessment.
